Words by Robert Hunter; music by Jerry Garcia.
("Ripple" composed and written by Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter. Reproduced by arrangement with Ice Nine Publishing Co., Inc. (ASCAP))
If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung
Would you hear my voice come through the music
Would you hold it near as it were your own?
It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken
Perhaps they're better left unsung
I don't know, don't really care
Let there be songs to fill the air
(Chorus)
Ripple in still water
When there is no pebble tossed
Nor wind to blow
Reach out your hand if your cup be empty
If your cup is full may it be again
Let it be known there is a fountain
That was not made by the hands of men
There is a road, no simple highway
Between the dawn and the dark of night
And if you go no one may follow
That path is for your steps alone
(Chorus)
You who choose to lead must follow
But if you fall you fall alone
If you should stand then who's to guide you?
If I knew the way I would take you home

Dear Mr. Vaughn, Nancy, Greg and family, Our hearts are broken by the news. We can't even begin to understand what you must be going through. No one can prepare you for such a loss. It came as a shock. We have very warm and fond memories of Dave and will always remember him. For this reason, he will live on in our hearts. We hope that the love of family and friends will comfort you during these very difficult days. It was an honor and a blessing to be Dave's friends.

I had several opportunities to perform with David over the years. Our paths crossed mainly playing theater productions around the Cleveland area. He was a fun guy to play with and was very dedicated to his favorite sports teams. We will miss his good humor and playing in the theater pit.

Dear family and friends of David,
I've known David since High School, and he's been a musical friend since then. I am greatly saddened by this sudden loss.
Please know that he was always putting his musician friends first - never taking a cut off the top for finding gigs. His life intersected too many to mention, but I can tell you that he always remained true to me and my family.
As a musician, he was an excellent bass trombone player, and was a presence to be reckoned with in any group he played.
David introduced me to my wife Lisa at a musical (Solon Little Theater), and for that I will be eternally grateful. He also introduced me to my first Amaretto Sour at a gig at CVLT.
He was definitely one of a kind, and I, along with my family, will mourn this loss.
Our prayers are with you, his family, and with the even greater group that called him a friend.

I remember meeting David 15 years ago when I played the show "Roar of the Greasepaint, Smell of the Crowd". Shortly afterward he started calling me to sub in with Seasonal Brass on a regular basis, and offered me a trumpet spot when one regular moved on to other things. That was 15 years ago and I will always miss his laughter and good cheer.

David was a good friend and a fine musician. We roomed together for a while many years ago. He enjoyed his work checking and testing trombones. He was born on my Mother's birthday, and his middle name was mine!

We send our sympathy to David's family and want them to know how much we appreciated David. David and his "Seasonal Brass" volunteered to entertain at the Cleveland Stroke Club Holiday party and they did that for over 25 years! We think David was special.

david was the man who put together all the pit orchestras for my productions of Gilbert and Sullivan at Chagrin Valley Little Theatre for many many summers. He was so easy to work with, a great wit and a good musician. His help as well as his friendship were immeasurable. I shall never forget this wonderful man. God bless his gentle soul and welcome into His kingdom.

Dear Jim, Nancy, Greg and families: So sad to read of David's passing and wondering why him at this point in his life. Knowing him through the high school years in band and from when we were a part of the Vaughn family at Greenville Area Ambulance Service, I feel like a lost a brother. Hadn't seen him in years, but I know whenever I did, he was always so happy to share the joy of playing with his band. He truly did love his music and theater. I'm sure he will be missed by them and also by each every one of you. Just makes you stop and think how precious and unpredictable our lives are. May God grant you comfort during this time of loss and many you always remember the good and even the bad times you had with David. He is now at peace up in Heaven with Marie and I'm sure they are enjoying each other's company. God bless!
